Pet Of the Month

March 2010 - Ruby

Ruby is a beautiful 10 year old staffy.

When Ruby came to see us not long ago, it was apparent there was something seriously wrong as she had a very large abdomen. She was also having trouble eating and sleeping had also become very diffcult for her due to the size of her tummy.

After an examination the Vets determined that there was a large mass in her abdomen and her only option was surgery if there was any hope of recovery. There are always risks invovled in surgery but this one would be an incredibly big one so in preparation Ruby was put on fluids prior to being given anaesthetic.

It became apparent during the operation that the mass was an ovarian tumour weighing a total of three and a half kilograms once removed. Due to the size of the tumour there were some complications during the surgery. Ruby's blood pressure dropped significantly and had lost quite a bit of blood so the Vet needed to give Ruby adrenalin in order to bring her blood pressure up. It was also necessary to give her a blood transfusion and who else better than Fang to donate the blood, Fang is the surgery's labradoodle who is often seen welcoming visitors to the surgery. Despite these complications Ruby makes it through and is sent to hospital for observation overnight.

After a night of TLC, pain killers and heating blankets she was bright and eating and ready to be sent home that afternoon.
