The easiest way to tell if your pet is overweight is to try and feel their ribs. If you can easily feel your pet's ribs, they are probably not overweight. You should also be able to see your pet's "waist." That is, when you look down your dog or cat, there should be a slender part between their ribs and their hips. If you cannot see a waist, or if you cannot feel your pet’s ribs with ease, then your pet may well be overweight. Keep reading! Sometimes a medical problem can cause your pet to be overweight. More often it is because we love our pets so much, and can’t resist those puppy dog eyes that say “I’m soooooooo hungry!” So that we can keep your pet healthy, it is important we distinguish between the two. This may require a few blood tests. As your pet gets older their metabolism slows down and they exercise less. This means it is more difficult for them to lose weight so it is important to watch the weight of your pet from an early age.
